Having said that, despite dropping seven of their last 10, the Yankees are still perched atop the competitive, American League East, at 52-28, possessing a 2.0-game lead over the 2nd place, Baltimore Orioles. Overall, this team owns the third-best record in the Majors. They've always been strong in the Bronx. But this season, very quietly they own the best road record in baseball, at 28-14 away from home. Yes, I am aware the New York Mets are starting to stride. They have won eight of their last 10. But are still just 37-39 overall, tied for 3rd place with the Washington Nationals in the National League East. They sit 14.- games behind the Divisions top team, the Philadelphia Phillies. We've read the headlines about the Mets high payroll and their poor statistics. Let's face it, playing at Citi Field is no bargain for this team, as they are just 18-23 at home in 2024. These two crosstown rivals have split their last 10 matchups. The headlines over the last few days have surrounded Giancarlo Stanton being placed on the 10-day injured list. While he is certainly one of the best hitters in baseball, please understand that the Bronx Bombers lineup ranks 5th in scoring, averaging 4.99 runs per game. Gerrit Cole will make his second start of the campaign against David Peterson. The Yankees right-hander pitched well in his debut a little less than a week ago, going 4.0 strong innings, and allowing just two earned runs, while striking out five batters. He did not factor in the decision. The Mets left-hander is making just his fifth start of the campaign. Overall, he possesses some good numbers, going 3-0 with a 3.97 ERA. However, his ERA soars up to 5.40 at home. He has given up earned runs in every appearance thus far. The Yankees are still a great team, one of the best in baseball. They certainly like to beat up on their crosstown rival. They have a stronger lineup, a seasoned veteran on the mound, and oh yeah, the 2nd ranked pitching staff in baseball behind him.
